William S. Boyd

Executive Chairman
One of the best-known and most respected figures in the gaming industry, Bill Boyd is the Executive Chairman and co-founder of Boyd Gaming Corporation. As Executive Chairman, he serves as the primary liaison of Boyd Gaming with customers and employees, and takes a leading role in shaping the Company’s strategic direction and vision.

An attorney by training, Boyd practiced law in Las Vegas for 15 years prior to founding Boyd Gaming. His experience in the gaming industry dates back to July 1962, when he joined his father, Sam Boyd, in acquiring the Eldorado Casino in downtown Henderson, Nev. Boyd also had an ownership interest with his father in the Union Plaza Hotel and Casino in 1971.

In 1974 the Boyds co-founded Boyd Gaming Corporation to finance construction of the California Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas. When the property opened in January 1975, Boyd left his law practice and began a full-time career in the gaming industry. Boyd led the successful development of Sam’s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall on Las Vegas’s Boulder Strip in 1979. Six years later, Boyd secured the largest bank loan offered to a casino company at that time, helping Boyd Gaming finance its 1985 acquisition of the Stardust and Fremont.

Bill Boyd succeeded his father as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Gaming in August 1988. After taking Boyd Gaming public in 1993, Boyd led the Company through a period of rapid growth and expansion. Starting with the May 1994 opening of Sam’s Town Tunica – the Company’s first property outside of Nevada – Boyd Gaming acquired or developed 14 new properties over an 11-year period.

Under Boyd’s leadership, Boyd Gaming partnered with MGM Resorts International to develop and open the $1.1 billion Borgata Hotel Casino in 2003 – one of the most successful casino properties in the history of the industry. Boyd also led the $1.3 billion acquisition of Coast Casinos in 2004.

Boyd served as chief executive officer of Boyd Gaming until January 2008, when he was succeeded by current Boyd Gaming CEO Keith Smith.

In addition to his work at Boyd Gaming, Boyd has been an active philanthropist and civic leader for decades. He was on the Board of Directors of the Las Vegas Downtown Progress Association; President of the Better Business Bureau of Southern Nevada; member of the Board of Directors of Nevada State Bank for 20 years; and founded the Bank of Nevada (formerly known as Bank West of Nevada). He was also President of the Nevada Resort Association; Vice Chairman of the American Gaming Association; and is President Emeritus of the National Center for Responsible Gaming, following a 12-year term on the NCRG’s board of Directors.

In 1997, Boyd provided the initial $5 million for the creation of the William S. Boyd School of Law at UNLV. In 2005, he contributed another $25 million to the Boyd School of Law, helping the school quickly establish itself as one of the leading law programs in the country.

Boyd holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a law degree from the University of Utah. His is also a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1953 to 1955.
