Diamond Jo Dubuque Steps Up to Improve Recycling Efforts Property-wide

2/27/2025

The Diamond Jo Green Team partnered with the Iowa Waste Exchange, an entity of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, to conduct a 24-hour waste audit.

While its team members have done a fantastic job stepping up to recognize and separate recyclables from trash, there are still opportunities for improvement. The audit helped in that process by sifting through casino waste to identify items that were being discarded instead of properly recycled, such as aluminum cans and compostable food.

The audit is part of a broader effort by the Diamond Jo team to keep as much waste out of local landfills as possible through a strategy of reusing and recycling.  For instance, the Green Team has encountered items on-site such as furniture, shelving and materials made from metal, plastic, or wood. When team members come across such items—often assumed to be trash—the Green Team works to find resources to divert them from waste. This year, for example, the property donated old lighting from the Mississippi Moon Bar to a local college for their use in the theater program.

Overall, Diamond Jo is proud to have exceeded their year-end diversion goal of 70% thanks to the dedicated efforts of Facilities Manager, Chuck Brandy, Facilities Assistant Manager, Brandon Pine, Cherry Lanes Director, Bob Hochrein, IT Director, Jim Hoppman and Facilities team member, Doug Schreiber.
